Tell your story through comics – but in non-traditional media such as paint, pastels, and even collage. Like any comics course, you’ll focus on learning the language of comics and how to clearly communicate a narrative. Beyond this, you’ll be asked to keep a personal journal/sketchbook in which you’ll generate ideas for your short comic strip. If you’ve taken Mixed Media Comics, Making Comics, or any other comics courses, you’re well prepared to take this course.

By addressing how printing can be incorporated as a starting point for art making in general, you’ll investigate ways to use screenprinting as a tool for making images and objects like: books, collages and paintings. ART NARRATIVES: CONTEMPORARY MEXICAN ART

This course is the first of its kind at Marwen! In Art Narratives you’ll explore contemporary Mexican art history through art practices, artistic and social movements, the exhibition of work, and questions of representation and identity. Through this process, you’ll incorporate your own art-making and responses to contemporary Mexican art, visit galleries and museums, and meet inspiring artists.

Explore the different public faces of graffiti and the messages it echoes. Pieces will be generated through current themes on gentrification, urban planning and public accountability. You’ll engage in the various graffiti practices such as standard spray paint graffiti, reverse clean graffiti, chalk drawing, and photography. Video is one of the most dynamic media for contemporary art practices. You’ll learn basic and advanced editing techniques for creating your own unique video works. Create new video and audio material to put your personal spin on stock footage. There will be screenings of contemporary video art and discussions that deal with video’s ability to globally communicate ideas and information. If you’ve previously studied video or animation, you’re well prepared for this course!

Spontaneity will be encouraged as you experiment with various forms, contours, and textures on the pottery wheel. In this course, you’ll make heaps of wheel-thrown and hand-built clay forms, then assemble them into beautiful vases and abstract sculptures. If you’ve previously studied ceramics or sculpture, you’re well prepared for this course!

In this course you’ll explore and immerse yourself in the art genre of the nude figure and improve your drawing skills in this intense, fast, and fun course. You’ll use drawing media such as graphite, conte, pastels, markers and ink on traditional and non-traditional drawing surfaces. Bringing the imagery onto a conceptual level, you’ll combine mixed-media techniques to build abstract works of art inspired by the living nude. If you’ve taken drawing courses in the past, you’re well prepared for this course! You must include a written permission note from your parent or guardian with your completed registration form.
