Session I

You can do it all! Try your hand at pencil, charcoal, India ink, water-soluble paints, and markers. Build exciting compositions while discovering tricks and techniques for drawing, painting, and working with mixed media.

Document your experiences and share them with others! Learn the basics of traditional photography through the use of black-and-white film and darkroom film developing. You’ll experiment with a variety of cameras—from pin-hole to manual SLR’s.

Learn to draw exciting portraits of people on the streets! You’ll study at Marwen for one week, then travel to busy Chicago locations during week two as you develop and increase your drawing confidence, concepts, and practices.

Photography can take many different forms. In this course, you’ll explore the evolution of photographic art-making processes including cyanotype, pin-hole, camera-less photography, and traditional film processes. Previous photography experience required.

Learn to apply the basic principles of machine and hand sewing—such as cord, French, and mock French seams—as you build a garment to wear. You’ll also gain knowledge of the fashion industry as a whole, from traditional to contemporary designs.

Want to learn how to be a photographer for a newspaper or magazine? Learn to work with digital cameras and get daily assignments of what needs to be photographed. You’ll tour several parts of the city to capture your images and tell your story.

Make fabric art with your life as the inspiration! Begin to think about your future in a creative way by learning new artistic skills from visiting artists and experiencing where professional artists work. Then, apply all that you learn to the artwork you are making!

Learn about Islamic tile patterns, with their striking colors and geometric designs, to create unique tiles expressing your own message. You’ll combine a small number of repeated geometric shapes and then interlace them to decorate a large surface.

Create your personal narrative! You’ll design “windows” using digital photography and mixed media collage to illustrate the view of the inside and outside worlds of a window in your home. The “windows” will hold a combination of digital photography, published text, images, and drawings, all highlighted with your own alterations.
