Meet Anthony Cline: Meditative Ceramicist

Young Artist Spotlight Series - 2026 - Anthony Cline poses with a sculptural self-portrait in unglazed clay

Anthony (he/him) is a 10th grader who has found a passion for ceramics through Marwen’s free art classes. Anthony has taken classes like Shaping Sculpture: Introduction to Wheel Throwing, Mixed Media: Painting and Sketching, It’s Alive: Horror Films, and Make It Functional: Advanced Ceramics.

“My favorite class has to be ceramics, as it has allowed me to make my imagination come to life in a way that drawing or painting hasn’t fully done.”

Marwen Young Artist Anthony practices his sketching technique by working on life drawing using a grid template.

Although he has taken drawing, painting, and 3D printing, and he has a talent for life drawing, Anthony was drawn most to clay. He finds that he can “morph” it into almost anything he can imagine. He says that he finds the process of shaping and working with clay to be relaxing.

Marwen Young Artist Anthony Cline explores handbuilding techniques in Marwen's ceramics studio.

“In ceramics, I’ve learned that patience is key. If things don’t work out the first time, try again, if not the second, try for a third.”

Anthony is also currently a part of the Marwen Lab cohort for the 2025-2026 school year, where he is delving deeper into Marwen’s studios and even has the opportunity to work on commissioned pieces.

Anthony’s pursuit of his art skills is inspired in part by his second oldest sister, who he says always strives to do something new and better, in art and in general. When asked for advice for newcomers to Marwen, Anthony said:

“Just go for it. Even if you think you won’t like it, try it because you’ll never know if you truly like something until you try it.”

Marwen young artists bring boundless creativity and enthusiasm into the studios, and now they can submit their art and ideas to be featured around the building and on social media! Marwen’s Young Artist Spotlight series offers young people an opportunity to promote themselves and their art to the Marwen community and beyond.

Each term (Spring, Summer, and Fall), we will choose one high school and one middle school artist to feature. Young people can submit their work by completing the survey below.
