Meet AvI Mallory: Fiber and Mosaic Artist

Avi is a 7th grader who has only recently joined us here at Marwen, but has already taken a variety of classes like Experimental 2D Cities, Sew Plushie!, and Cornerstone Mosaics. One class stands out, so far:

“My favorite class is 3D Printed Cities because it’s so cool to see a design that I created come to life from a machine!”

This summer, Avi was part of Marwen’s Cornerstone Mosaics course, where she and other young artists worked together to make artwork that will be installed permanently at our building. And, spoiler alert, it looks incredible!

Avi draws inspiration from all sorts of avenues. Fantasy books and movies, other art and artists, her four cats, or even the small differences between each day can foster new ideas. And Avi can meet that inspiration with the range of artistic media she likes to work with.

“I like traditional art. Like, with a pencil and paper. But I also like to do digital art, like with an iPad and an Apple Pencil. That’s fun. And I like working with [upcycled materials] like cardboard… and plastic bags.”

Avi has some words of wisdom for people new to Marwen, or who aren’t sure what to pursue yet:

“Art classes can broaden your horizons in the art world and help you find your own style of art.”

To hear from Avi herself, watch the short video made by our teen intern Brook, a participant in the Art@Work Summer Paid Intership program!

Marwen young artists bring boundless creativity and enthusiasm into the studios, and now they can submit their art and ideas to be featured around the building and on social media! Marwen’s Young Artist Spotlight series offers young people an opportunity to promote themselves and their art to the Marwen community and beyond.

Each term (Spring, Summer, and Fall), we will choose one high school and one middle school artist to feature. Young people can submit their work by completing the survey below.
