Meet Joaquin De Leon: Filmmaker
Joaquin is a 9th grader who has been at Marwen for a fews years now, and he has definitely found his niche and his artistic passion in classes like Storyboarding and Animation, “Coming Soon” Movie Trailers, and Short Film Summer: Filmmaking.
“”Most of my hobbies are things I also do at Marwen. But I love watching movies a lot. Movies are probably one of my favorite things. Yeah. Movies and video games and comic books are probably my favorite things to do. Movies are a big inspiration always. And I want to go into film.”
Joaquin is a great storyteller. He’s inspired by philosophy, comics, and movies, and he enjoys the collaborative aspect of digital video production here at Marwen.
“My favorite genres are found footage horror. The Creep movies, Blair Witch, like, found footage horror specifically. Superhero movies are more of like a comfort genre.”
Joaquin is a very observant and thoughtful emerging filmmaker, and one summer simply isn’t enough for the scope of some of his projects:
“If there was a film class that went on for four weeks instead of two, I think that’d be awesome. Because the big thing about film is it is hard to get so much in like a little amount of time. It’s like a big thing I’m noticing now where there’s a lot of extra things I want to do to perfect it, but I just don’t have the time.”
Folks new to Marwen may not always get their first chioce of classes, but Joaquin says not to worry:
“The first class you take, just kind of rough it out. Because once you’re in the system, like once you’re here at Marwen, then you get to do a lot more of what you want. Because once you’re in the system, then you get to, like, really choose your classes, and then you even get the classes early and stuff, and once you’re at Marwen, it just keeps getting better.”

Marwen’s Young Artist Spotlight series offers young people an opportunity to promote themselves and their art to the Marwen community and beyond.
Each term (Spring, Summer, and Fall), we will choose one high school and one middle school artist to feature. Young people can submit their work by completing the survey below.
